Event Cinema for March 2015
It’s the busiest month yet for rock, rap, pop, ballet, theatre and opera at Bristol cinemas. As ever, check the what’s on section for further information and trailers.
Royal Opera House: Der fliegende Hollander
Bryn Terfel returns to sing the tormented Dutchman in Tim Albery’s much-acclaimed modern-dress production of Wagner’s romantic masterpiece, which was first staged at the Royal Opera House in 2009.
Screening March 1 (encore screening): Odeon, Cinema De Lux, Vue Longwell Green, Vue Cribbs Causeway
Their recent recorded output may have been a tad on the ropy side, but Aerosmith can still put on a hell of a live show, as they demonstrated when they headlined the Download Festival on June 15 last year. No info has been released about how much of their 19-song set is included in this HD recording of the event, which comes ahead of a DVD and blu-ray release.
Screening March 3: Cinema De Lux
Director Christopher Luscombe recyles his Love’s Labour’s Lost cast for this romantic comedy companion piece, which is better known as Much Ado About Nothing. The play is updated to a post-WWI setting and broadcast live by satellite from Stratford-upon-Avon.

Laura Mvula live at the Paradiso Amsterdam
HD recording of this sold-out performance of Laura Mvula’s debut album, Sing to the Moon. It’s preceded by a live satellite introduction by Mvula herself and will be followed by a short acoustic set.

Bolshoi Ballet: Romeo and Juliet
Prokofiev’s greatest ballet, recorded live in 2013. Choreographed by the Bolshoi’s former artistic director Yuri Grigorovich, this production stars Alexander Volchkov as Romeo and Anna Nikulina as Juliet.

Globe on Screen: Duchess of Malfi
The widowed Duchess of Malfi longs to marry her lover, Antonio. But her brothers, Ferdinand and the Cardinal, are not best pleased at this development. When their spy, Bosola, discovers that she’s secretly married and is now up the duff, they exact an ‘orrible revenge. Gemma Arterton stars in the title role of John Webster’s Jacobean tragedy. The curtain-raiser for The Globe’s debut season in the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse, it’s the first theatrical production to be filmed entirely by candlelight.

English National Opera: La Traviata
Peter Konwitschny’s modern-dress staging of Verdi’s masterpiece broadcast live from the London Coliseum. It’s being promoted by the distributors as ideal for opera virgins as it zips by in less than two hours, administering far less arse punishment than yer average fat lady songfest.

NT Live: Behind the Beautiful Forevers
Meera Syal stars in this acclaimed Mumbai slum drama, adapted by David Hare from Pulitzer Prize-winner Katherine Boo’s non-fiction book. With grim inevitability, it’s been dubbed a “true life Slumdog Millionaire story”.

Mediaeval Scottish King Giacomo (Hey – Rossini was Italian, OK?) disguises himself to woo sexy lake lady, Elena. But, alas, her dad, who fights against the King, has promised her hand to some other bloke. To complicate matters further, our moist heroine has the hots for someone else entirely. This bel canto opera based on Sir Walter Scott’s poem is rarely performed today, making the Met premiere something of a treat for enthusiasts.

One of the Royal Ballet’s ever-popular signature works, for which Anthony Dowell returned to the choreography originally created by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov for the Mariinsky Theatre in 1895

Drake’s Homecoming: The Lost Footage
The Platinum-selling, Grammy-nominated R&B/hip-hop star recorded live at the Toronto Sound Academy in 2009. The footage was thought to have been lost, but its recent rediscovery has allowed the distributors to bulk it out with additional interview material.

Maxine Peake stars in Sarah Frankcom’s much-acclaimed modern-dress, cross-gender, feminist production of the Bard’s great tragedy, which was both a critical hit and the Royal Exchange Theatre’s fastest-selling show in a decade.

NT Live: A View from the Bridge
Belgian director Ivo Van Hove’s tense and thrilling Young Vic production of Arthur Miller’s great tragedy. Mark Strong stars as Brooklyn longshoreman Eddie Carbone, who welcomes two illegal Sicilian immigrant brothers into his home, but seethes with rage when his innocent 17-year-old niece falls in love with the younger sibling. This ain’t gonna end well.
