Event cinema for December 2014
If Black Eye Friday hasn’t filled you with the spirit of goodwill to all men (apart from that bastard who just crawled over the crushed body of his dead grandmother to rob you of the last bargain telly), then the Event Cinema industry is determined to make you come over all Christmassy. There’s the Nutcracker, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and, er, Dick Whittington live from the Bristol Hippodrome. Those of a more upmarket disposition can enjoy the Rembrandt exhibition, The Crucible and Chuckles Wagner’s only comic opera. Full details of what’s showing where, plus trailers where available, can be found in the what’s on section.
Exhibition on Screen: Rembrandt
From the people who brought the Matisse exhibition to cinemas, this guided romp round the National Gallery’s blockbuster Rembrandt show tells all about the artist’s turbulent and productive final years.
Screening: Dec 2
The Old Vic’s The Crucible
There are plenty of screenings to cater for the anticipated huge demand to see this HD recording of Yael Farber’s acclaimed production of Arthur Miller’s great parable. Thorin Oakenshield himself (yes, Richard Armitage, for it is he) leads the cast.
Screening: Dec 4, Dec 7 & Dec 14
Dick Whittington Live with Ashleigh and Pudsey
Seriously – it’s broadcast live to local cinemas from just down the road at the Bristol Hippodrome.
Screening: Dec 7
Bolshoi Ballet: La Bayadere
Bolshoi principals Svetlana Zakharova and Maria Alexandrova star in Yuri Grigorovich’s scenic production of Marius Petipa’s classical ballet.
Screening: Dec 7
National Theatre Live: John
A rare 18-rated Event Cinema screening, Lloyd Newson’s latest bold dance theatre work follows a chap named John through a life of crime, drug use and marginal living.
Screening: Dec 9
Met Opera: Die Meistersinger Von Nurnberg
Roll up for Wagner’s only comic opera, which he dashed off during a break while writing the Ring Cycle. It’s a mere six hours long too.
Screening: Dec 13
Royal Ballet: Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland
The return of Christopher Wheeldon’s modern family ballet, with a fine score by Joby Talbot. It’s broadcast live on Dec 16, with an encore screening on Dec 28.
Screening: Dec 16 & Dec 28
Bolshoi Ballet: The Nutcracker
Trad Christmas Tchaikovsky ballet, broadcast live in HD from chilly Moscow. You know the drill: dancing nutcrackers, hordes of mice, a sugar plum fairy. Are these people on drugs?
Screening: Dec 21
