Bristol music documentary nominated for award
My Secret World, the locally made documentary about Bristol record label Sarah Records, has been nominated in the Best Film category at this year’s RTS West of England Awards. The ceremony will take place at the Old Vic on March 8.
Made over the course of four years on a very limited budget by local graphic artist, filmmaker and music video director Lucy Dawkins, the film charts the development of the cult local DIY indie pop label that notched up more than a hundred 7″ single releases between 1987 and 1995. It also explores why Sarah and its output were absolutely despised by the national music press, especially the New Musical Express. “You still can’t see the wood for the twees,” snorted the NME in 1993.
My Secret World was shown at last year’s In-Edit film festivals in Barcelona, Milan, Pamplona, Bilbao and Chile and will be released in the UK in April. A screening has been set up at the Cube on Thur 14 May. This may be followed by a Q&A with the filmmakers and label founders Clare Wadd and Matt Haynes, though details are still being confirmed.
