We seem to be back to the days when the only news concerns one major blockbuster. Disney’s faith in superhero/kung-fu mash-up Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings proved well founded when it took £5.8m at the weekend – breaking the post-lockdown record set by Fast & Furious 9. Alas for the House of Mouse, it remains to be seen whether the film will actually get a release in China. Rumblings about racial stereotyping may deny it the opportunity to clean up in a market Uncle Walt targeted so blatantly. There was very little change in the rest of the chart, with Rise of the Footsoldier: Origins being the only other new entry. Catering to the needs of the niche knucklehead audience, this one opened in tenth place. Just outside the top ten, The Nest continues to do well among arthouse audiences, its distributor is claiming an equally niche record: the highest-grossing non-family film released by an independent distributor since cinemas reopened. If you’ve yet to see this one, the Watershed have just held it over for another weekend.
