Mufasa: The Lion King, Disney’s technically impressive if narratively underwhelming prequel to its 2019 remake of the 1994 animated feature The Lion King, roared to the top of the chart in the last weekend before Christmas. But its £4.4m opening haul was significantly down on the £16.7m of its predecessor. There was little movement in the rest of the top five, but Conclave is about to break through the £5m barrier in sixth place as awards season beckons. By contrast, Kraven the Hunter continues to perform pretty dismally for a Spider-man ‘universe’ flick. All the usual festive guff is back too, including the annual event cinema performance of The Nutcracker and the evergreen It’s a Wonderful Life. The Polar Express, Home Alone and Elf are all hovering outside the top ten too. Wallace and Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl also enjoyed a very limited cinema release ahead of its Christmas Day broadcast on BBC1 in order to qualify for awards nominations.
