Even with four full days of ‘previews’, the poorly received, nudge-winky Baywatch didn’t stand a chance against the might of Wonder Woman. This first lady superhero flick certainly hoovered up the column inches, but it fell well short of the opening weekends of the other ‘DC extended universe’ films. That’s perhaps to be expected, as WW is a less bankable character than Batty or Supes. The current target to beat is set by Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, which is about to become only the fourth superhero film to sail through the £40m barrier at the UK box office. Pirates of the Caribbean: Salazer’s Revenge tumbled to third place, but suffered only a marginal drop in earnings. It’s still likely to emerge as the lowest grossing film of the entire series, suggesting that audiences may be starting to tire of Captain Jack. Blockbuster naysayers, meanwhile, will rejoice at the news that outside the top ten the likes of The Red Turtle, My Life as a Courgette, The Other Side of Hope and, perhaps surprisingly, Dough, are all doing a roaring trade on limited releases. All four of these have just been retained for a further week at Bristol cinemas. See our comprehensive film listings for details and screening times.
