The space critters of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 comfortably held off the challenge from the sentimentalised pooches of A Dog’s Purpose, but are certain to be blown away by those more malevolent xenomorphs of Alien: Covenant next week. Vol. 2 is on course to overtake the first film and currently ranks as the sixth most successful Marvel film in the UK. Elsewhere, it was a fairly quiet week on the chart, with none of the other major new releases managing to drum up much interest. But indie comedy Mindhorn is doing a roaring trade on a relatively small number of screens, taking more than the big-budget thriller Unlocked managed from a saturation release. The film with the most staying power, however, is Lady Macbeth, which recorded a tiddly decline in takings during its second weekend and has now amassed nearly half-a-million quid from just 113 cinemas.
