Those bellicose apes crushed gawky adolescent Spidey as Spider-Man: Homecoming was knocked down to third place by War for the Planet of the Apes after just one week at the top in the latest blockbuster slugfest. War is doing pretty well by Apes standards, though it’s a little behind its predecessor, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, which enjoyed an £8.7m opening weekend. Despicable Me 3 is the clear winner in the kiddy animated threequel stakes, comfortably holding off the challenge from Cars 3. The latter suffered the lowest opening ever for a Pixar flick in the UK, suggesting that audiences have had their fill of this atypically mediocre franchise. Despite Spider-Man: Homecoming‘s abrupt fall to third place, it’s still doing pretty well in the Marvel pantheon. This latest reboot has overtaken Thor and will soon eclipse Iron Man. Blockbuster naysayers, meanwhile, will be delighted to learn that The Beguiled ranks as Sofia Coppola’s second-biggest UK opener after the Oscar-winning Lost in Translation.
