Chart copyright Comscore

As we head into awards season, Paul Thomas Anderson’s Licorice Pizza enjoyed a strong opening to claim third place in the chart. That’s particularly impressive given that it’s showing on fewer than a third of the number of screens hogged by Spider-Man: No Way Home, which still accounts for most of the film tickets sold in the UK. Spidey has just swung into the UK’s all-time box office top ten, displacing the live-action remake of The Lion King. The question now is just how high it can go. The £96m haul of No Time To Die is not out of reach. Further down the chart, Jessica Chastain thriller The 355 opened to a critical mauling and general indifference. But several of the other films on general release enjoyed a rise in takings. That’s partly because the previous chart covered the New Year weekend. But Disney will be hoping that Spielberg’s West Side Story hangs in there after its victory at the decidedly unglamorous Golden Globes and gains further traction when the less compromised awards ceremonies arrive. Mind you, it still has plenty of ground to make up. In the UK, this lauded musical remake is now around £1.5m behind Clifford the Big Red Dog.
