Never underestimate the appeal of cheesily heartwarming crooning anthropomorphic animated beasts. Sing 2‘s impressive £6.8m opening puts it ahead of the first film, which was released back in 2017. It also ranks as the third biggest opener since the pandemic began, dislodging Spider-Man: No Way Home after six weeks at the top. Still, the Spidey flick now ranks as the sixth highest grossing film of all time at the UK box office. It still has £4m to go to eclipse Avatar and break into the top five. Further down the chart, Pedro Almodovar’s award-winning Parallel Mothers was the clear winner among arthouse punters. It’s sixth place is particularly impressive given that this one opened on fewer than a third of the number of screens occupied by Sing 2.
