Kenneth Branagh’s Belfast was the latest contender to attempt to depose Spider-Man: No Way Home, falling just short of its target despite a strong performance – especially in Northern Ireland. Spidey, meanwhile, continues to do remarkably well and will shortly overtake Avengers: Endgame to claim sixth position in the UK all-time top ten. Guillermo del Toro’s psychological thriller Nightmare Alley had to settle for fourth place, but could yet pick up with the anticipated awards nominations. Disney’s Encanto is now the longest-serving title in the chart and actually recorded a modest rise in earnings last weekend – albeit from a pretty low base. Spielberg’s West Side Story, by contrast, is fading fast in cinemas, but seems likely to do well as the latest addition to the upcoming summer outdoor screening circuit where it could find an audience alongside such singalong perennials as Mamma Mia! and Bohemian Rhapsody.
