Preview: Pint of Science festival

By Maria Aguado  Monday Apr 10, 2017

Like a shot of theory with that pint?

For three days in May, learning about some of the latest scientific theories will be as easy as heading down to your local for a pint. From May 15-17, Bristol will be one of 100 cities in 12 different countries taking part in the Pint of Science festival.

During the festival, more than 25 specialists from the University of Bristol will speak on topics ranging from volcanoes and the effects of far-away eruptions on the UK, to the addictive powers of music and tobacco, along with what molecular analysis can tell us about what our ancestors ate.

EatDrink24/7 Launch Party is back on July 8 2026!
Exclusive collabs from Bristol’s favourite food vendors, available for one night only. Be first to grab your free copy of the EatDrink24/7 guide – plus every ticket comes with a free limited-edition beer can.

Additional activities will accompany the talks, including quizzes, puzzles and live experiments.

Pint of Science, now in its fifth year, is a volunteer-run initiative founded by two UK researchers, Dr Praveen Paul and Dr Michael Motskin. They wanted to make science more accessible to the public by giving people the chance to hear scientists talk about their research first-hand.

“Science can often get lost in translation, leading to the spread of pseudo-science and myths,” says Dr Motskin. “The best way to overcome this is for people to be able to talk to scientists directly in a familiar environment, such as in a pub over a pint.”

This year’s festival includes Creative Reactions, a project where researchers work with artists to produce science-inspired art. Creative Reactions launches at the Greenbank pub on May 9 and will run for two weeks.

Tickets for each event are £4. To find out more about the festival and book tickets, visit www.pintofscience.co.uk/events/bristol
