Bright night: Celebrate science in Bristol

By Chris Brown  Friday Sep 26, 2014

Pirates, weathermen and surfers will be on the streets of Bristol today to entice Bristolians to explore science and celebrate Bristol’s reputation for cutting edge research.

The first Bristol Bright Night runs from midday to midnight and features interactive exhibitions, demonstrations, talks and live street performances.

The University of Bristol, Bristol Natural History Consortium and the University of the West of England have all joined forces for the event.

EatDrink24/7 Launch Party is back on July 8 2026!
Exclusive collabs from Bristol’s favourite food vendors, available for one night only. Be first to grab your free copy of the EatDrink24/7 guide – plus every ticket comes with a free limited-edition beer can.

Visitors to Bristol Bright Night will explore bugs that glow in the dark, debate ‘robots vs animals’, enjoy pop-up science theatre, cook and eat with researchers while discussing how their work impacts on the daily life of a Bristolian, and learn how a pedestrian bridge could span Bristol Harbour.

The event takes place around the harbourside, with quick-fire introductions to fascinating subjects taking place at Watershed and the At-Bristol centre offering a host of interactive stalls.

Hayley Shaw, Cabot Institute Manager at the University of Bristol, said: “This event is all about bringing science into the public domain and demonstrating that anyone can engage with research – young or old. We hope that people will be inspired by the range of environmental, health, and engineering research in this fun and thought-provoking day.”

For more information about the event and to check out the programme for the day, visit the Bristol Bright Night website…
