RWA marks celebration of dance with new multimedia exhibition ‘Dance Out’

By Sarski Anderson  Wednesday May 13, 2026

A multimedia exhibition that celebrates all facets of dance has opened at RWA, where it will remain until August 9.

Dance Out comprises a blend of paintings, drawings and film capturing the art of dance as a social activity, a solitary endeavour, and an everyday activity that can be both formal, free, and everything in-between.

The featured works have been co-curated by David Remfry, whose large-scale painting of paired dancers is the lead image for the exhibition, and James Russell.

Amongst the other painters appearing are Denzil Forrester and Paul Dash, while other components include a short film in which Tracey Emin and others examine their personal relationship to dance.

Presented in an immersive installation, Night Moves, a newly commissioned and locally produced film by Melanie Manchot showcases a range of dancers in Bristol.

Also created for the exhibition, a specially curated soundtrack mixed by DJ d4rling will be played through a modular haptic dance floor made by Bristol company BEAT BLOCKS.

“With many night clubs and music venues struggling since Covid, this is a timely, celebratory exhibition”, organisers say.

“Like dance culture itself, Dance Out crosses boundaries, blurring distinctions between the personal and the social as it does between media and between genres.”

Dance Out is at RWA until August 9. Find out more at www.rwa.org.uk.
