Sea life and natural world artist Giles Ward releases debut book of paintings

By Sarski Anderson  Tuesday Aug 2, 2022

Leading sea life painter Giles Ward is well known in Bristol, particularly to patrons of Clifton Fine Art, and renowned Whiteladies Road fish restaurant The Spiny Lobster, where many of his works adorn the walls.

Originally from Yorkshire, Ward’s decision to base himself in Bristol was borne of fond childhood memories of holidaying in the south west, where he first fell in love with beach walking and rockpooling.

“That’s when I began looking closely at the shimmering colours, the tell-tale texture of shells, the perfect patterns nature creates,” he recalls.

This level of detail is writ large in Ward’s work. Tiny subjects are magnified onto large canvases, revealing myriad colours and intricate patterns that can be easily overlooked by the naked eye.

The anchovy is just one example. “At first it may just appear silver,” he points out, “but as its tiny body turns to the light an incredible palate of purples, blues, reds and pinks appear. Blown up large you really see the wonder in these little creatures.”

Ward has now launched his debut book of paintings: See Life – paintings inspired by life in the sea featuring 30 full colour illustrations of his work, along with accompanying facts about 19 species of fish and shellfish.

Along with some of his paintings, he will also be appearing at The Dorset Seafood Festival Seafeast in Weymouth on September 10-11.
