Community-led climate change mural unveiled

By Edie Earle  Tuesday Apr 8, 2025

A new community mural has been unveiled which highlights collective action and climate change.

The mural on Dove Street in Kingsdown between Fremantle House and Francis House says: ‘Let us breathe’.

It depicts the damaging effects of climate change on the local population and the power of challenging it with community-run collective action.

The project also aims to challenge stereotypes against the local area by “reflecting and celebrating residents’ reflections and identity”.

Led by Dove Street community organisers Victoria Rivera-Ugarte, Mike Stuart and Camille Libby, the painting of the mural was an ongoing, collaborative effort of diverse voices.

Sessions were run in which residents could share how they have been affected by climate change and there was an “open invitation” to anyone who would like to contribute.

Hundreds of flyers were also distributed and passers-by were encouraged to join in.

At the unveiling event on Monday evening, which featured an appearance from Bristol lord mayor Andrew Varney, organisers shared how important the project has been in bringing the community together.

“One of the best by-products of the mural is that we got to meet our neighbours,” said Mike, who designed the mural and has lived in Kingsdown since 2008.

“When you’re standing painting with them for hours you just get to know them…

“We’ve now generated a community that will jump at the chance to do another mural.”

Plans for the mural were ongoing since October 2024, and for Victoria, the unveiling of the mural marked the fulfilment of months of hard work: “I feel very emotional… I’m very proud,” she said.

It is the community’s third mural since 2022 and certainly not their last; organisers said that the project is “just the beginning” and they already have permission to paint another mural nearby.

“Every wall is a potential piece of art,” Victoria added.
