Bristol artist Duke Mitchell opens solo exhibition ‘ONE MAN RIOT’
Nestled in the Clifton Arcade, Huw Richards Evans Contemporary Art has now been open for just over a year – curating a number of group exhibitions within that time.
Opening on May 1 and running for almost three weeks, the venue will now be hosting a solo exhibition from avant-garde Bristol artist, Duke Mitchell.
The collection is dubbed ONE MAN RIOT – a title that, in Mitchell’s words, is emblematic of his “constant internal battle forged into an artwork – a battle against the prevailing winds of culture, taste and art production.

‘Flowers from the Garden’

‘Man in Tuxedo’
“This ‘riot’ is not political or violent, it is aesthetic and joyful”, he explains. “This ‘riot’ is not against the government or police, it is against the algorithm.
“For some, art is seen as a meaningless exercise in self-indulgence; for others it is a voyage of discovery and the difference between life and death.”

‘Open-top Balaclava’

‘Autumn’
The work has been produced using traditional media and salvaged and second-hand materials, and offers a characteristically wry blend of social and art historical themes.
For Evans, it was Mitchell’s energy, satire and “wildly creative” approach that stood out. “Every piece holds a hidden narrative,” he enthuses, “revealed to us with wit, freedom and a sense of fun that we rarely see in contemporary painting.”
