Corbyn PR back in Bristol to work with mayor
Jeremy Corbyn’s former head of media has joined Bristol City Council as one of mayor Marvin Rees’ top advisers.
Kevin Slocombe, who ran Rees’ press office in his 2012 bid to be mayor, took up the role of strategic adviser after leaving Labour’s London head office earlier this month.
Slocombe, a former head of communications at the CWU, the union which voted to pull funding for Bristol’s three Labour MPs last week, becomes the new mayor’s only permitted political appointment to the council.
Slocombe was described as “the no-bullsh*t voice of reason among the madness” of Corbyn’s operation by Paul Staines, the influential blogger behind the Guido Fawkes website.
A former postman, leader of the CWU in Bristol and one-time Bristol Rovers blogger for Bristol24/7, Slocombe will be paid £63,622 (just under Marvin Rees’ £65,738 salary) to effectively replace George Ferguson’s old adviser in the mayor’s office, Zoe Sear.
Sear was brought into the fold to fill a new role after the elected mayor position was created in 2012, but went on to become communications director at Bristol 2015, the vehicle used to run the city’s European Green Capital project. She is now head of communications at Triodos Bank.
