New junction agreed for M49

By Laura Collacott  Monday Feb 13, 2017

Highways England has revealed the preferred option for a £50 million new junction on the M49 to provide greater access to Avonmouth. An important logistics location, the industrial zone at Severnside currently has no direct access to the M49.

The Farm Lane Two Bridge Option, using the existing bridge at Farm Lane and building another alongside, was chosen for its relative affordability, use of less land and ability to incorporate cycling and pedestrian options. Detailed designs will now be drawn up.

Construction should begin by the end of 2017, subject to statutory approvals.

Tim Davies, head of the Bristol office of global real estate specialists Colliers International, said: “The implications of the new M49 junction for Bristol and the South West are far-reaching. This significant infrastructure improvement will provide improved access and unlock the huge economic potential of the Avonmouth/Severnside Enterprise Area, and this will in turn boost the economy of the wider Bristol area.”
