A quarter want to go self-employed
New research from NatWest’s Enterprise Monitor shows that 26 per cent of people across the South West would prefer to be self employed, but 57 per cent are held back by the fear of failure.
Yet while there is a will, there isn’t much of a way, with just 2 per cent of people in the process of setting up their own businesses. 20 per cent cited the economic climate as preventing them from starting up, down from 46 per cent when the survey was first conducted in 2012.
Kevin Morgan, Regional Director, Bristol and South West Business Banking, NatWest, said: “Despite improving economic conditions and a clear entrepreneurial desire in the South West, too many people are still being held back from following their ambitions. These figures highlight the need for the right early support for start-ups, which can help people overcome the barriers to starting and establishing a successful business.”
