Best known for the extraordinary Went the Day Well? and two segments of Dead of Night (including the brilliant ventriloquist’s dummy sequence), Alberto Cavalcanti was a Brazilian-born, Swiss-educated architect and lawyer who worked extensively in the British film industry during the 1940s. This terrific noir is one of his lesser-known works, with Brief Encounter star Trevor Howard cast as a former RAF pilot who falls in with a gang of petty thieves and finds himself framed for the murder of a policeman.
The Cube is screening a BFI 35mm print thanks to 2A Films, a repertory cinema programme dedicated to sharing lesser-known or lesser-seen films with audiences.
