Adapted from Ernest Cline‘s novel of the same title, this is the live-action/animated dystopian sci-fi blockbuster that Steven Spielberg put on hold so he could knock out The Post.
It’s 2045 and the whole planet’s turned to shit as a result of all the usual: overpopulation, climate change, pollution, and so on. So mankind has decided to stick its head in the virtual sand by retreating into the online world of OASIS (that’s Ontologically Anthropocentric Sensory Immersive Simulation, fact fans). Now its creator (Spielberg regular Mark Rylance) has popped his clogs, triggering a contest to win full control of OASIS and his $500 billion fortune. This results in a David vs Goliath battle pitting a teenager (Tye Sheridan) and his chums against a corporate giant with very deep pockets.
