On no account to be confused with the recently reissued austere Jacques Rivette ’60s arthouse drama of the same title, this very different slice of nunsploitation is actually a spin-off from the seemingly endless Conjuring supernatural horror series.
If you’ve been paying attention, you’ll know that it’s actually the fifth film in the franchise after the first two Conjuring flicks and that brace of Annabelle prequels, and features a character who was introduced in The Conjuring 2. That’s right: Bonnie Aarons now takes centre stage as Valak the demon nun. Set in 1952, this instalment finds the naughty novitiate up to no good in a Romanian monastery and is, chronologically speaking, the first film in the series (i.e. a prequel to the prequel).
