One Cut of the Dead

Director
Shinichiro Ueda
Certificate
15
Running Time
96 mins

An indie film crew are making a low-budget zombie flick in an abandoned warehouse where – ulp! – secret military experiments once took place. Enter a bunch of real zombies to wreak havoc.

Something of a sensation in Japan, this $27,000-budgeted workshop film project with non-professional actors took $30m at the box office despite having a marketing budget of precisely $0. It’s been described as the best zombie comedy since Shaun of the Dead and is certainly barking mad, opening with an unbroken 37 minute shot and then abruptly changing direction from full-on horror to become a charming comedy.
