This one was released as Sgt Stubby: An American Hero in the US, but that was presumably considered rather too flag-salutin’ for sensitive British tastes. It’s nonetheless a rattling good true yarn from WWI, suitably sanitised for younger viewers and rendered in animated form with plenty of uplifting messages about heroism, teamwork, etc.
The eponymous canine hero is a stump-tailed terrier stray who winds up in the trenches of France with young army ‘doughboy’ Robert Conroy (voiced by Logan Lerman) and goes on to become the first mutt promoted to the rank of Sergeant in US military history. The rest of the voice cast includes Helena Bonham Carter and Gerard Depardieu.
