Next to our very own Aardman, Laika is one of a handful of studios that specialise in stop-motion animation. Their impressive list of credits includes Coraline, ParaNorman and The Boxtrolls, plus contract work on Tim Burton’s Corpse Bride, all of which are a cut above the frantic CG of those Ice Age/Kung Fu Panda flicks. This time, they’re trying something a little different – a Samurai tale set in ancient Japan.

Young Kubo is a rural storyteller who accidentally summons a pesky evil spirit, prompting a quest to solve a mystery involving his warrior father. The animation is typically stunning, and the voice cast includes Art Parkinson (Rickon Stark in Game of Thrones), Charlize Theron, Matthew McConaughey, Ralph Fiennes, Rooney Mara and George Takei.
