Royal Opera House Encore: Mayerling

Certificate
12A
Running Time
195 mins

Like some kind of 19th century Austrian-Hungarian teenage goth, crazy Crown Prince Rudolf is obessed by death. Forced into marriage, he subsequently hooks up with Mary Vetsera, who shares his morbid fascination, and the odd couple form a suicide pact.

Based on historical fact (the ‘Mayerling Incident’) and created for the Royal Ballet by Kenneth MacMillan back in 1978, this raunchy tale of dangerous desires, family secrets and political intrigues is orchestrated and arranged to the music of Franz Liszt by John Lanchbery. It now ranks as something of a classic in the Royal Ballet’s repertory.
