In smalltown 1960 Montana, an outwardly perfect, all-American family falls apart after dad (Jake Gyllenhaal) loses his job and pride simultaneously and heads off to the mountains to help fight a wildfire, leaving mum (Carey Mulligan) to cope alone with the couple’s 14-year-old son, Joe.
Adapted from Richard Ford‘s novel of the same title, Paul Dano‘s directorial debut is a powerful, unsparing and engrossing drama with superb performances all round.
