From Russian Ark to Victoria, the one-shot feature is always a challenging undertaking, but this one ups the ante by being a re-enactment of a real-life incident: specifically, Norway’s deadliest mass shooting.
Centring on a bunch of fictional composite characters fleeing right-wing extremist Anders Behring Breivik at a social democrat island summer camp back in 2011 would seem to be a recipe for controversy and a magnet for accusations of exploitation. But director Erik Poppe won the support of survivors by consulting them closely and being meticulous in his reconstruction, right down to the number of shots fired. The killer himself is never named and kept at a distance in order to immerse us in the experiences of his victims.
