Now here’s a turn-up for the books. Filmed back in 2014, this always seemed like a big, glossy, middlebrow slam-dunk. Justin Chadwick‘s follow-up to Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom was scripted by Deborah Moggach and Tom Stoppard, attracting a starry cast that includes Alicia Vikander, Judi Dench, Christoph Waltz and Tom Hollander. Indeed, this slice of (mis)calculated Oscar bait was made so long ago that the producer was, erm, Harvey Weinstein.
Alas, despite endless recutting and marketing tweaks (we’re currently expected to buy it as a steamy period sex romp, apparently), it proved a monumental box office disaster and was eviscerated by the critics. The film’s current Rotten Tomatoes rating is 11%. Naturally, we assumed this one had now disappeared altogether, but it suddenly popped up on the release schedule. The story, if you’re interested, has an artist in 17th century Amsterdam falling in love with a married woman after he’s hired to paint her portrait.
