The great Olivia Colman as a member of an isolated Appalachian sect of Pentecostalist serpent handlers? Ooh, yes please!
She plays the evocatively named Hope Slaughter, who’s something of a zealous convert to the faith that requires adherents to prove their devotion by exposing themselves to poisonous snakes, on the grounds that Beardy Man in the Sky will protect them from harm. Alas, this is a rather sombre drama rather than a pleasingly trashy exploitation thriller, centred on a dilemma faced by comely preacher’s daughter Alice Englert.
