Before their rather more famous collaboration on 1923’s The Hunchback of Notre Dame, director Wallace Worsley and the great Lon Chaney teamed up for this terrific, if somewhat non-PC 1920 gangster flick about a “legless cripple with a cunning and criminal mind”. Chaney plays the evil Blizzard, who is motivated primarily by a desire for revenge on the medic who mistakenly amputated his legs after a childhood accident. In typical Chaney style – and against the advice of studio doctors – he designed a painful device that strapped his legs behind his thighs to give the illusion that he was an amputee.
This special screening of Lobster Films’ new digitally restored print of the film with live musical accompaniment is presented by South West Silents.
