Unseen for 20 years as a result of copyright wrangles until 2006, when this newly restored director’s cut was released, The Passenger is the last of Michelangelo Antonioni’s trilogy of ’70s films for MGM.

Jack Nicholson is on top form as a burnt-out TV news journalist working in Africa who decides to swap identities with an acquaintance he finds dead in a Saharan hotel room. The deceased turns out to have been a gun-runner, which leads to poor old Jack being pursued across Europe. But Antonioni is concerned less with pandering to thriller convention as his is with exploring the hack’s inner emptiness
