Being bereft of a dowry, Suzanne Simonin (nouvelle vague icon Anna Karina) finds herself obliged to enter a convent, where she’s beaten and almost starved to death. Having failed to annul her vows, she’s transferred to another convent where she becomes the object of the Mother Superior’s lesbian advances. A priest offers to help her escape but then rapes her. Further misery awaits on the outside.
Now digitally restored, Jacques Rivette‘s austere 1965 adaptation of Diderot‘s novel was hugely controversial on release and initially banned in France.
