What happens when some hippy makes absolutely shitloads of money with a low-budget film that the suits don’t understand, so they decide to give him a mountain of cash for his next one in the hope that he can repeat the trick and make everyone rich, man? Here’s the answer.
Hot from Easy Rider, Dennis Hopper could make any film he wanted. So that’s precisely what he did with this indulgent, free-wheeling, experimental drama in which he also stars as a Hollywood stuntman making a movie in Peru, who stays on to hook up with a miniskirted prostitute. Needless to say, the Universal execs were horrified, critics were not exaclty kind (“…one of the all time classics of pretentiously incomprehnsible cinema”), the film bombed at the box office, and Hopper wasn’t allowed to direct again for nearly a decade. Unseen for many years The Last Movie has now been fully restored, so you can judge for yourself whether The Man was unfairly harsh.
