We’ve had more than enough WWI dramas, but Of Gods and Men director Xavier Beauvios takes a different tack with his meditative, bucolic new film. For a start, this is a rare war drama with female characters to the fore, focusing as it does on the women who kept French farms running while the men were away fighting.
Labouring beneath a grey wig, Nathalie Baye is cast as matriarch Hortense, who runs a farm with her daughter Solange (Baye’s real-life daughter Laura Set) in a time before machinery helped with much of the back-breaking work. In order to cope with the workload, Hortense takes on a new farmhand, orphan Francine (an excellent performance by newcomer Iris Bry).
