The Fever

Director
Maya Da-Rin
Certificate
12A
Running Time
102 mins

Widowed Justino (Regis Myrupu), a member of the indigenous Desana people, works as a security guard at a chaotic cargo port in Manaus. His closest relative is his daughter Vanessa (Rosa Peixoto), who will soon be leaving to study medicine in Brasilia. Untethered from the village life in which he was raised, Justino finds himself adrift in increasingly urbanised modern Brazil and begins to suffer from a malaise that may be metaphysical in nature.

Maya Da-Rin‘s much-acclaimed debut feature is a powerful and timely meditation on the tensions between nature and modernity. Don’t go expecting a straightforward story, though: the film has been described as more of a sensory experience than a narrative one.
