Wealthy Boston spinster Bette Davis is dominated by her fearsome dragon of a mother Gladys Cooper. She blossoms while taking a cruise away from the old trout and falls for married Paul Henreid. But her happiness is to be short-lived.
It’s the film that gave us the line “Don’t let’s ask for the moon. We have the stars,” introduced the romantic gesture of lighting two cigarettes simultaneously (before everyone died of lung cancer), and bagged Bette her sixth Oscar nomination. And now it’s been fully restored.
