When high-school track athlete Cameron (Chloe Grace Moretz) is caught en flagrante with her lover Coley (Quinn Shephard) on prom night, she’s packed off to God’s Promise – a Christian ‘gay conversion’ centre – by her suitably appalled aunt and legal guardian. This is run by the monstrous, dogmatic Dr. Lydia Marsh (Jennifer Ehle), who aims to treat evil same-sex attraction by means of rigorous ‘de-gaying’ techniques.
Bisexual Iranian-American director Desiree Akhavan adapts Emily M. Danforth‘s coming-of-age novel, which was in turn inspired by a real-life story. This ain’t the first film about a lesbian teen packed off to a gay conversion camp (that would be But I’m a Cheerleader), but it has garnered excellent reviews and won the Grand Jury Prize at this year’s Sundance Film Festival.
