Lion director Garth Davis teams up again with Bristol-born producer Iain Canning for a Biblical biopic with Rooney Mara in the title role and her real-life squeeze Joaquin Phoenix as that nice Mr. Jesus.

Mainstream Christianity once viewed Mary Magdalene rather harshly as a strumpet, but this makeover takes a more modern approach, depicting her as a noble proto-feminist of impeccable morals, battling the social conventions of her times in order to follow the charismatic beardy fella to Jerusalem.
