Claire Denis – modern arthouse cinema’s lauded queen of grimness, torpor and opacity – comes over all perky with this talky, perceptive romantic comedy starring Juliette Binoche as fiftysometing Parisian artist and divorcee Isabelle, who’s on the hunt for happiness.
Alas, this doesn’t come easily, owing to the succession of crappy, incompatible suitors she endures (a conceited banker, a fellow artist, er, Gerard Depardieu), whose needs rarely align with her own. Interestingly, Let the Sunshine In is inspired by, but – wait, come back! – not directly adapted from Roland Barthes‘ 1977 book A Lover’s Discourse: Fragments.
