The titular ditty is, it says here, a “beloved song that inspired millions”. Never heard of it, or the band MercyMe? Me neither. The small print reveals that I Can Only Imagine is the biggest selling Christian pop hit of all time. How did it come to be written? Prepare for this drama starring Dennis Quaid to get seriously god-bothery on your ass with a gloopy yarn about hope and forgiveness that – ulp! – “beautifully illustrates that no one is ever too far from God’s love – or from an eternal home in Heaven.”
Needless to say, US critics had a lot of fun with this. “Like so many faith-based efforts, I Can Only Imagine suffers from a terminal case of self-importance,” groaned the Hollywood Reporter.
