Taking its cue from Edward P. Vining’s book The Mystery of Hamlet, this radical 1921 interpretation of the Bard’s great tragedy imagines that Hamlet’s inner turmoil stems from being a woman – specifically a princess forced by her scheming mother to pass herself off as the male heir to the throne. Danish screen siren Asta Nielsen takes the title role.
This screening includes a live score performed by Lillian Henley, pianist at the Cinema Museum in London
