Bulgarian filmmakers Kristina Grozeva and Petar Valchanov follow up their award-winning debut The Lesson with a pitch-black comedy that eventually takes a turn for the very bleak indeed.
In rural Bulgaria, stuttering recluse Tzanko (Stefan Denolyubov) works on the nation’s decaying railways. One day, he happens upon a massive pile of cash, which he promptly returns to the authorities without pocketing any of it. This makes him a figure of fun among his co-workers, but the communications supremo at the beleaguered Ministry of Transport sees an opportunity to use the hapless, shambling Tzanko for propaganda purposes. Alas, this sets in motion a train (sorry) of events with unexpected, ultimately tragic consequences.
