Don’t Worry, He Won’t Get Far on Foot

Director
Gus Van Sant
Certificate
15
Running Time
114 mins

When 21-year-old Portland alcoholic John Callahan (Joaquin Phoenix) is left quadriplegic after a car accident, his girlfriend (Rooney Mara) packs him off to AA where an unrecognisable Jonah Hill becomes his mentor. Developing a talent for politically incorrect cartoons, Callahan finds a new lease of life and establishes an international reputation.

There’s nothing in Gus Van Sant‘s biopic that we ahven’t seen many times before – y’know: addiction, adversity, redemption – but sentimentality and cheap Tinseltown uplift are kept mercifully at bay, and Phoenix contributes a great central performance.
