In the family mansion, Agnes (Harriet Andersson) lies on her deathbed, riddled with cancer. She’s tended by her two contrasting sisters: Karin (Ingrid Thulin) and Maria (Liv Ullmann). Superbly filmed by Sven Nykvist (who won an Oscar for his cinematography), Ingmar Bergman‘s intense 1972 meditation on responses to death is an extraordinarily powerful and unremittingly bleak chamber piece.
