Another gay conversion therapy drama anyone? Hard on the heels of last year’s schematic indie The Miseducation of Cameron Post, here’s an earnest, well-meaning film from Joel Edgerton, based on Garrard Conley‘s memoir of the same title.
Lucas Hedges (the closeted kid in Lady Bird) takes the lead role as traumatised Jared, who’s packed off to the inaptly named Love in Action camp by his ashamed southern Baptist preacher father Russell Crowe. It’s a make-or-break situation, as he faces permanent exile from his family and community if he doesn’t return comprehensively de-gayed. Accompanying him on the journey is devout Christian mom Nicole Kidman, while Edgerton himself plays the counsellor who – surprise! – seems to have some sexual identity issues of his own. It’s all told in modish, non-linear style, though few surprises are sprung along the way. Go here for our review.
