Winner of the Grand Prix at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival, this feature debut by actor-turned-director Mati Diop (you may have seen her in Claire Denis’s 35 Drops of Rum) has been described as a “Voodoo-realist drama”. Despite being betrothed to someone else, Ada (Mame Bineta Sane) is in love with construction worker Souleiman (Traore), who toils on a luxury beachfront tower in Dakar. They’re separated when Souleiman joins a bunch of fellow workers in making the hazardous journey by boat to Spain in search of a better life. So far, so conventional. Then the supernatural element kicks in…
This being yet another of those Netflix films, the Cube’s screening is probably your only opportunity to see it on the big screen. It’s preceded by live music from Senegalese musician Batch Gueye and a recorded intro from director Mati Diop. Afterwards, there’s a panel discussion hosted by Mia Bays and Simran Hans.
