In France, Christine Angot is a controversial figure who’s renowned for her upmarket brand of semi-autobiographical misery lit. She has also ventured into film, co-writing Claire Denis’s anti-romcom Let the Sunshine In. Adapted by Summertime director Catherine Corsini from Angot’s 2015 bestseller of the same title, An Impossible Love is a fictionalised depiction of the author’s childhood as seen through the eyes of her mother.
It opens in 1960, with Rachel (Virginie Efira) working as a secretary when she begins a passionate but stormy affair with the callous Philippe (Niels Schneider). After their liaison results in the birth of a daughter, Philippe refuses to acknowledge her. Decades later, he re-enters their lives with disastrous consequences.
