After the Wedding

Director
Bart Freundlich
Certificate
12A
Running Time
112 mins

If the title sounds familiar that’s because this is indeed a US remake of Danish former Dogme director Susanne Bier’s 2006 drama, which boasted a terrific lead performance by the ever-excellent Mads Mikkelsen as an overseas aid worker whose troubled orphanage is offered a lifeline by a mysterious, eccentric billionaire.

If you’ve seen the (superior) original, you’ll know there’s a Big Twist on the way. But the only twist we’ll give away here is that the genders have been reversed, with Michelle Williams as the aid worker and Julianne Moore as the would-be benefactor. Moore’s hubby Bart Freundlich directs. Reviews from Sundance, where the film was unveiled, were decidedly mixed.
